Car Insurance Basics

Car insurance is a must these days! The roads

  • Liability: means YOU'RE responsible. So if you have a wreck that is your fault, the state of Texas requires you to carry limits of at least $30,000 for each injured person, up to $60,000 per accident, and $25,000 for the other's property damage
  • Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist: this coverage has the same limits as your liability, but this coverage is for YOU in the case that you get in an accident where the other driver does not have insurance or high enough limits to cover the damage to you and your vehicle
  • Medical Payments: cover medical bills and funeral expenses, up to the designated limit, resulting from an automobile accident
  • Personal Injury Protection (PIP): pays for lost wages and physical therapy in addition to medical and funeral expenses resulting from a car accident
  • Full Coverage: includes comprehensive and collision deductibles. Most lien holders require you to carry $500 deductibles if the car you purchased is financed
  • Rental: provides an allotted amount for a rental vehicle in the event your car is not driveable due to an accident
  • Roadside: provides assistance for things like a breakdown, towing, locked keys inside the car, etc.
  • Gap Coverage: say you owe more money to your lien holder than the car is worth; gap coverage is an endorsement you can add that will pay the extra amount you owe in the event your car is deemed totaled. This can be purchased through the car dealership at time of purchase, but it is typically cheaper through your car insurance
  • New Car Replacement: this endorsement will replace your vehicle with the most recent make and model should your car be totaled in an accident
